Dante Alighieri, penyair besar Italia

Dante Alighieri dianggap sebagai salah satu penyair yang paling berpengaruh pada dunia sastra dunia. Bahkan ketika karyanya mulai memasuki Amerika, terjadi konflik diantara para pelaku sastra Amerika. Ada dua kutub ketika itu, dan kutub yang sudah eksis memuja karya Shakespeare sebagai standart tertinggi sastra.

Durante degli Alighieri, lebih dikenal dengan Dante, (1 Juni 1265 – 13/14 September 1321) adalah penyair dari Firenze, Italia. Karya terbesarnya, la Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy), dianggap sebagai salah satu karya literatur terbesar di Eropa selama Zaman Pertengahan, dan merupakan dasar bahasa Italia modern. Dante Alighieri Society, didirikan di Italia pada 1889, melanjutkan upaya pengembangan budaya dan bahasa Italia ke seluruh dunia atas namanya.

Divina Commedia

Divina Commedia (Komedi Ketuhanan) adalah puisi wiracarita (puisi yang sangat panjang, seperti cerita) dalam sastra Italia yang ditulis oleh Dante Alighieri. Puisi ini dianggap sebagai salah satu karya terbesar dalam sastra dunia.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, penulis besar Rusia

Selain Leo Tolstoy, Rusia melahirkan penulis besar lainnya yaitu Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (Анто́н Па́влович Че́хов) (29 Januari 1860 – 15 Juli 1904) terkenal terutama karena cerpen-cerpen dan dramanya. Banyak dari cerpennya dianggap sebagai apotheosis dari bentuk sementara dramanya, meskipun hanya sedikit - dan hanya empat yang dianggap besar - mempunyai dampak yang besar dalam literatur dan pertunjukan drama.

Chekhov lebih dikenal di Rusia modern karena ratusan cerpennya, dan banyak di antaranya dianggap merupakan adikarya dalam bentuk karangan tersebut. Namun demikian drama-dramanya juga memberikan pengaruh yang mendalam terhadap drama abad ke-20. Dari Chekhov, banyak pengarang drama kontemporer belajar bagaimana memanfaatkan suasana hati, hal-hal yang kelihatannya tidak berarti dan inaksi (berdiam diri) untuk menyoroti psikologi batin para tokohnya. Keempat drama utama Chekhov - Burung Camar, Paman Vanya, Tiga Saudari, dan Kebun Ceri—seringkali ditampilkan kembali dalam pementasan-pementasan modern

(Shakespeare Quotes): What's in a name? That which we call a rose

Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet meet and fall in love in Shakespeare's lyrical tale of "star-cross'd" lovers. They are doomed from the start as members of two warring families. Here Juliet tells Romeo that a name is an artificial and meaningless convention, and that she loves the person who is called "Montague", not the Montague name and not the Montague family. Romeo, out of his passion for Juliet, rejects his family name and vows, as Juliet asks, to "deny (his) father" and instead be "new baptized" as Juliet's lover. This one short line encapsulates the central struggle and tragedy of the play.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 – died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.[1] He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who bore him three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592 he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.

Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1590 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. Next he wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest examples in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime, and in 1623 two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare's.

Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians hero-worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry". In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance.
